What you will be able to do

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Module 1 — Defining and Conceptualizing Supervision

  1. Describe Proctor’s three functions of supervision (normative, formative, restorative) and give one example of each from your setting.
  2. Differentiate clinical supervision from consultation, therapy, and administrative oversight, including the supervisor’s gatekeeping role in the triadic relationship.
  3. Identify a supervisee’s developmental level using Stoltenberg’s Integrated Developmental Model and select a matching supervisory stance.
  4. Apply Bernard’s Discrimination Model to choose a supervisor role (teacher, counselor, consultant) for a given focus area.

Module 2 — The Supervisory Relationship

  1. Describe the three components of the working alliance (Bordin) and list first-session practices that build psychological safety.
  2. Analyze how power and authority operate in supervision and identify two practices that make the power differential explicit and safe.
  3. Recognize parallel process in a supervision vignette and explain how to name it with a supervisee.
  4. Demonstrate, in role play, a five-step repair of a supervisory rupture and document it.
  5. Match supervisory structure to a supervisee’s developmental stage, including adjustments for first-generation and underrepresented clinicians.

Module 3 — Methods, Multicultural Supervision, and Evaluation

  1. Select appropriate supervision modalities (case presentation, live observation/video, interpersonal process recall, role play, Socratic questioning) and document an observation.
  2. State the structural requirements for group supervision in your jurisdiction, including group-size limits.
  3. Apply cultural humility and the RESPECTFUL model to broach identity and positionality in supervision.
  4. Distinguish formative from summative evaluation and rate a supervisee’s competency using evidence rather than impression across seven domains.
  5. Develop a defensible written remediation plan for a documented performance gap.

Module 4 — Standards, Ethics, and Legal Exposure (2 ethics hours)

  1. Apply the relevant professional codes (NASW, AAMFT, AMHCA/ACA, NAADAC) to a supervision scenario and identify where they differ.
  2. Identify the supervisor’s legal exposure (direct and vicarious liability) and the documentation that reduces it.
  3. Recognize conflicts of interest and dual relationships in supervision and select a management strategy.
  4. State the supervisor’s mandatory reporting duties and timelines when a supervisee practices outside scope or engages in unprofessional conduct.
  5. Use a six-step ethical decision record to analyze a supervision dilemma and justify a course of action.

Module 5 — Contracts, Documentation, and Division-Approved Status

  1. Construct a written supervision contract that meets your state’s requirements, including an AI-use plan.
  2. Produce a supervision session note that meets state documentation elements.
  3. Summarize the requirements to obtain and maintain approved-supervisor status in your state (Utah: Rule R156-60e).

These objectives appear word for word on the course evaluation, where you rate each one.

How the course is delivered, and how attendance works

Live virtual (interactive)

Delivered live on Google Meet as an interactive course: polls, chat prompts, breakout rooms, and live Q&A throughout. You will need a computer or tablet with a camera and microphone and a reliable internet connection; cameras are expected on. Attendance is recorded by the platform (join and leave times) and confirmed by a signed attestation the same day. During the course, reach the instructors in the chat; before and after, email support@theintegrationinstitute.com and we respond within one business day. If a technical problem on our side costs more than 15 minutes of instruction, we make it up in the same session or transfer you to another date at no cost.

In person

You sign in on arrival and out at departure with exact times, and sign an attendance attestation before you leave. Venues are chosen for step-free access and accessible restrooms.

No partial credit

Credit is awarded only for the full course. If you must leave early, you may transfer at no cost to a future date and complete the course then. A completed evaluation is required before a certificate is issued.
