“Approved Supervisor”?
Beginning January 1, 2027, Utah requires the Approved Supervisor designation before you can supervise. Attending a training isn’t enough on its own — DOPL has to issue the designation, and it prints on your license. Most Utah supervisors don’t have it yet.

What changed
Utah rewrote how clinical supervisors qualify. Training is the requirement you complete. The designation is the status DOPL grants you afterward, and it’s the one that counts.
Two things make this easy to miss. It applies to people who have supervised for years, not only to new supervisors. And there’s no notification — nothing arrives in the mail telling you your license is short a line.
Six things Utah requires
Most people have four of them already and don’t know which two are missing.
- A full, independent licenseLCSW, CMHC, LMFT, or MAC. An associate-level license doesn’t qualify you to supervise.
- Two years in that licenseYou need to hold the full license for at least two years before you supervise.
- Recent practiceIn the 24 months before you supervise: clinical supervision, clinical mental health therapy, or direct client care.
- A minimum eight-hour supervisor training courseSynchronous, focused on clinical supervision, and covering five required content areas. Qualifying graduate coursework is the alternate path.
- Send DOPL your certificateYour training certificate or official transcript, with your name and license number.
- DOPL issues the designation“Approved Supervisor” is added to your license. This is the requirement — and it’s the part you can check yourself.

What the minimum eight hours have to cover
The rule is specific about the content, which is why not every supervision workshop counts.

If you don’t have it yet
The submission is simpler than most people expect. Send your training certificate or official transcript to DOPL, and include your name and your license number.
b8@utah.govThere’s no application form, and DOPL’s page lists no separate fee. Once it’s approved, the designation is added to your license. Check the lookup a few weeks after you send it, so you know it’s there.

Completing it is one of the six requirements above — the license classification, the two-year and 24-month timing, and your own submission to DOPL are also required, and the designation is issued by DOPL rather than by us.
